Overview

Your smile is important, but losing a tooth or teeth from medical problems, gum disease, accidents, and other reasons can affect the form and function of your smile. Replacing a missing tooth or teeth can make a person feel much more confident and may improve their life. Dental implants offer a foundation for new teeth by replacing the natural tooth root with a metal screw that is implanted into the jawbone. Once the dental implant has healed and integrated with the bone and gums, a false tooth or teeth can be attached to the implant. These dental implants look, work, and feel just like natural teeth. In his Dallas practice, board-certified Dentist Dr. Albert Ambriz provides dental implants, offering a strong foundation for a custom replacement teeth, including crowns, bridges, and dentures. Best Candidates

Dental implants can help restore the appearance of the smile by replacing missing or damaged teeth, but it can also help the patient's overall oral health. If a natural tooth is not replaced, the jaw bone can become weaker and make it difficult to eat, speak, and smile. By replacing the tooth root with a dental implant, patients can preserve the form and function of their mouth, which will help to avoid expensive bone or gum grafts in the future. Dental implants may be a good option for patients who don't want removable dental restorations (dentures or bridges) to avoid food restrictions and added cleaning.

What to Expect

A dental implant will need at least two appointments to complete the process. During the first appointment, the patient will be put under anesthesia or sedation so any damaged teeth can be pulled and the mouth is prepped for the implant. Dr. Ambriz will then place the implant(s) into the gum tissue and jaw bone. Patients typically need to wait 2 – 6 months before the implant has healed into the bone and tissue (osseointegration) so it will be a stable base for the crown, bridge, or denture. While waiting, patients will be given a temporary cover for their teeth to maintain normal appearance and function. Dr. Ambriz has all dental restorations made custom for each patient out of high quality materials at a professional dental laboratory. This gives patients a better fit, a more natural look, and longer-lasting results.

After Treatment

Patients may feel some discomfort and swelling after the implant is placed that can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription pain medications. Most patients will prefer a liquid or soft foods diet after the procedure. Dr. Ambriz will go over recovery instructions, including what to watch for, tips on oral care, and recommendations for better healing.

Once the dental implant and restorations are secure, patients should visit the dentist as often as recommended for cleanings and exams. Patients should also follow a good home oral care routine, including brushing, flossing, and an antimicrobial mouthwash. While dental implants look, feel, and work like natural teeth, patients should avoid hard foods (candy or ice) that may damage or weaken their implant.

Anticipated Costs

The total cost of a dental implant will be based on the number of implants, the materials used, and more. Dental insurance may cover part of the cost of the dental implant and procedure if it is medically necessary. Dr. Ambriz will discuss treatment options based on the patient's needs and budget during the consultation as well as payment methods and financing options with CareCredit and Lending Club.
