Thanks to technology, dental procedures are becoming faster, more comfortable, and more accurate. At the Ambriz Center for Reconstructive & Cosmetic Dentistry in Dallas, TX, the advanced Biolase EPIC diode laser system can be used for both gum contouring surgery as well as other procedures, such as teeth whitening. The Biolase EPIC system can whiten all dental enamel on average to 4 – 6 shades during a 20-minute office treatment. In addition, patients can have excess gum tissue removed with soft tissue surgery to improve the appearance of a "gummy" smile, as well as improve other concerns that may be the result of a periodontal (gum) concern.

The modern Biolase EPIC diode laser system can be used for a number of cosmetic issues to help patients attain a nicer smile, while at the same time treat certain conditions. It can be used to perform either soft tissue (gum) surgery or in-office teeth whitening to help patients with:
- Excess gum tissue
- Gummy smile appearance
- Certain periodontal issues
- Discolored enamel
- Teeth stains
- A dull smile
What to Expect
Before soft tissue surgery, patients will receive a local anesthetic and possibly some other form of sedation depending on their needs. The laser can be used to shorten the gum, remove excess gum, and create a less "gummy" look. Teeth whitening can usually be performed without anesthesia, but patients can talk to Dr. Ambriz during their consultation about adding a mild sedative for dental anxiety. The laser targets each tooth precisely to create a whiter, brighter smile. Once the patient is prepared, Dr. Ambriz will perform the procedure with assistance from his dental hygienist. Patients should be able to leave the same day with recovery and follow-up instructions.
After laser gum contouring surgery, patients will be given instructions on how to care for their mouth. Instructions typically include suggestions on what to eat, how to clean the mouth, ways to minimize discomfort, how much recovery time the patient may need, and more. They will also get recovery instructions after laser teeth whitening that will help with any sensitivity or other concerns after the treatment. After laser dentistry procedures, patients are encouraged to follow a good home oral care routine and schedule regular dental visits to maintain the health and appearance of their mouth.
In some cases, laser dentistry is covered in part by insurance if the procedure is medically necessary. For cosmetic improvements, however, laser dentistry is usually not covered by dental insurance. During each patient's consultation, Dr. Ambriz will go over procedure decisions, cost estimates, and financial options (accepted payments and medical loans through CareCredit and Lending Club). If applicable, our office will work with the patient's insurance to determine their coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses.
